Interested in 8(a) certification? The SBA has free workshop in late Jan.

January 5, 2017 By Andrew Smith

More than 2,000 businesses across the state of Georgia know they can rely on the Georgia Tech Procurement Assistance Center (GTPAC) for top-shelf advice in the navigation of government contracting opportunities.  While our team of counselors advise businesses every day, we are quick to point out other quality resources that may be of help.

Certification in the federal government’s 8(a) Business Development Program is an example where the Small Business Administration (SBA) can be consulted before tapping into GTPAC’s services.

The 8(a) Business Development Program is a business assistance program for small disadvantaged businesses. The 8(a) Program offers a broad scope of assistance to firms that are owned and controlled at least 51% by socially and economically disadvantaged individuals.  Since many federal contracts are set-aside exclusively for competition by only 8(a)-certified firms, the Program can be helpful to entrepreneurs trying to gain a foothold in federal contracting.  Participation in the Program is divided into two phases, over nine years: a four-year developmental stage and a five-year transition stage.

You can learn about the eligibility requirements to participate in the 8(a) Program here: https://www.sba.gov/contracting/government-contracting-programs/8a-business-development-program/eligibility-requirements

If you meet the requirements and are interested in learning more, GTPAC recommends that you participate in one of the SBA’s upcoming seminars on the subject.  On Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2017, the SBA’s Georgia District Office is hosting a free seminar entitled 8(a) Business Development Certification Step by Step.  You can register to attend it at: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/8a-business-development-certification-step-by-step-tickets-27773666785

Please be advised that you do not have to pay for assistance in obtaining 8(a) certification — or for any other assistance with government contracting matters.  We advise you to consult with a GTPAC representative first — before considering paying for any forms of government contracting assistance.
